Each
summer (April to August), Florida beaches host the largest
gathering of nesting sea turtles in the United States. Female
sea turtles emerge from the surf to deposit eggs in the
sand nests. Hatchlings struggle from their nests after typically
50-60 days of incubation and scramble to the ocean. This
process takes place from the months of June through October.
Nearly all of this activity takes place under cover of darkness
and relies upon a natural light environment too often disrupted
by the addition of artificial lighting. This is a special
time of year when we are privileged to witness this occurrence
of an endangered species struggle to survive.
Come join us at the Surfcaster Motel and
witness this phenomenon of life's gentle giants struggle
to survive.
